Top 10 Medical Colleges in Karnataka

These are some of the most sought-after and well-established medical colleges in Karnataka. The list is not an official ranking. It is based on how long each college has been running, its attached teaching hospital, its standing in NIRF medical rankings and how much demand its seats get in counselling.

How We Ranked Them

We looked at five things: how established the college is, NMC recognition, the size and case load of its attached hospital, NIRF medical ranking, and counselling demand. Fees and seat numbers do not decide a college’s quality, so check both before you choose. NIRF rankings change every year, so check the latest list on nirfindia.org.

Karnataka MBBS Admission Process

Admission to every MBBS seat in Karnataka is based on your NEET UG score. What changes is the counselling body and the quota.

KEA State Quota Counselling

KEA conducts counselling for government college seats and for the government and private quota seats in private colleges. The usual steps are:

  1. Qualify NEET UG.
  2. Register on the KEA portal and fill in the application.
  3. Upload documents and attend online document verification.
  4. Enter your college and course choices (option entry).
  5. Attend the mock allotment and revise your choices if needed.
  6. Get seat allotment in each round, pay the fee and download the admission order.
  7. Report to the college with original documents.

KEA announces the schedule after NEET results. Check the official website for the current dates.

MCC Counselling (All India Quota and Deemed Universities)

MCC conducts counselling for the 15% All India Quota seats in government colleges and for all seats in deemed universities. Students from any state can apply for these seats. Register on mcc.nic.in, pay the registration fee and fill your choices.

Documents Required and Important Dates

Keep these ready, as KEA and MCC verify originals:

  • NEET UG admit card and scorecard
  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets
  • Date of birth proof
  • Category and income certificates, if applicable
  • Study certificates and domicile or residence proof for the Karnataka quota
  • Rural and Kannada medium certificates, if applicable
  • Passport-size photographs and ID proof

Dates change every year. Always follow the KEA and MCC notifications. We update this section when new dates are announced.

Eligibility for MBBS in Karnataka

  • Entrance exam: You must qualify NEET UG.
  • Age: At least 17 years on 31 December of the year of admission.
  • Subjects: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English from a recognised board.
  • Marks: Minimum 50% in PCB for the general category and 40% for SC, ST and OBC candidates, as per NMC norms.
  • Karnataka state quota: You must meet KEA’s rules for a Karnataka candidate, which are based on your study and residence history. Check the current KEA brochure for the exact rules.
Students from other states can apply through MCC for All India Quota and deemed university seats.

Seat Matrix of Karnataka Medical Colleges: Government, Private, NRI & Other Quota

Seats in Karnataka medical colleges are divided into four categories. The share of each category depends on the type of college. Percentages below follow the KEA seat matrix for medical courses in recent years. Confirm them in the current KEA brochure before applying.
CategoryMeaning
GovernmentSeats filled by KEA on state merit at government fees
Private (P)Private quota seats in private colleges. These include GMP and Open seats
NRI (N)Seats for NRI candidates at higher fees
Others (Q)Seats for other quota candidates at higher fees

Seat Distribution in Government Colleges

All seats in government medical colleges are filled through counselling at government fees. 15% go to the All India Quota through MCC, and the rest go through the KEA state quota.

Seat Distribution in Private Colleges (GMP, Open, Minority)

Private colleges fall into two groups: non-minority colleges (the KPCF group) and religious and linguistic minority colleges.
Seat categoryNon-minority private colleges (KPCF)Minority private colleges
Government seats40%25%
Private quota seats40%55%
NRI seats15%15%
Other seats5%5%
Within the private quota, seats are split like this:
  • GMP seats: Half of the private quota is reserved for Karnataka candidates. In colleges in the Kalyana Karnataka (Hyderabad-Karnataka) region, these are called GMP with Hyderabad-Karnataka seats.
  • Open seats: The other half is filled on NEET UG All India merit. Only Indian citizens are eligible.
  • Minority colleges: Of the 55% private quota, 66% is filled by candidates of the college’s own religious or linguistic minority. The remaining 34% is split equally between GMP and Open seats.
GMP stands for the private quota seats reserved for Karnataka candidates. Open means all-India merit seats for Indian citizens.

NRI and Other Quota Seats

Private colleges reserve 15% of seats for the NRI quota and 5% for other quota candidates. These seats carry much higher fees than the government and private quota seats.

What this means for you: A good NEET rank gives you access to government seats at a fraction of the cost. A lower rank can still get you a private quota seat, but fees are much higher. Not sure which quota fits your rank?

Affordable Private Medical Colleges in Karnataka

The lowest private quota fee in the table above is at St. John’s Medical College. Among colleges at the standard private quota fee, the fee is the same across most of them. The NRI and other quota fees are where colleges differ most. In our table, Navodaya, Siddaganga and Chamundeshwari have some of the lowest NRI and other quota fees. Fees can change every year, so check the KEA fee notification before you decide. A lower fee does not mean a lower-quality college, so compare hospital strength and location too.

Medical Colleges in Karnataka by City

Bangalore

Bangalore has the largest number of medical colleges in the state. Government options include BMCRI, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and the ESIC college. Private options include St. John’s, M.S. Ramaiah, Kempegowda, Vydehi, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, BGS Global, MVJ, Oxford, Sapthagiri, Akash, East Point and PES. If you want a city with large hospitals and many internship choices, Bangalore is the most common choice.

Mangalore and Manipal

The coastal belt has KMC Mangalore, KMC Manipal, Father Muller, A.J. Institute, Yenepoya, K.S. Hegde, Kanachur, Srinivas and K.V.G. (Sullia). Many deemed universities are here, so most admissions are through MCC counselling.

Mysore

Mysuru has Mysore Medical College & Research Institute (government) and JSS Medical College (deemed).

Davangere, Belagavi, Hubballi and Other Cities

  • Davanagere: JJM Medical College and S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences.
  • Belagavi: Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (government) and JNMC (deemed).
  • Hubballi and Dharwad: KIMS Hubballi (government) and SDM College of Medical Sciences.
  • Kalaburagi: Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences, ESIC Medical College, Khaja Bande Nawaz and Mahadevappa Rampure.

If your rank is good enough for a government seat, it is usually the best value. If not, compare private and deemed options on fees, hospital size, location and the quota you qualify for.

Karnataka MBBS Cutoff and Closing Ranks

There is no fixed NEET cutoff for any college. Each year, the closing rank depends on the number of applicants, the NEET difficulty, your category, the quota and the counselling round. For that reason, past closing ranks are a guide, not a promise.
How to use closing ranks:
  • Look at the closing ranks of the last two or three years for your category.
  • Check them round by round. Ranks usually move in later rounds.
  • Compare your rank with the colleges in the list above across all three types.
  • Keep a mix of safe, likely and ambitious choices when you fill options.
Karnataka also has reserved categories (GM, SC, ST, Category 1, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B) and a Kalyana Karnataka (Hyderabad-Karnataka) region quota, which changes the closing rank for your category.
